PlusComputers Instructor

UMBC’s Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering and Institute of Extended Learning seek a part-time instructor to teach in the PlusComputers certification program during the 2022 – 2023 academic year.

PlusComputers is a one academic year, four-course, two-semester accelerated computer science certificate. Two courses will be taught in the Fall semester and two in the Spring semester on the UMBC campus. The courses that will be covered in the fall semester are CMSC 201 (Computer Science I), and CMSC 210 (Advanced Computing). The courses that will be covered in the spring semester are CMSC 310 (Data Analysis and Structures), and CMSC 462 (Introduction to Data Science).

Courses will be delivered in an accelerated format so that each course can be taken in sequence. Each semester will cover two courses, one in the first half (8 weeks) and one in the second half (8 weeks) of the semester. Each course will consist of a combination of lecture and laboratory programming.

Schedule:
Classes will run daily Monday through Thursday throughout the Fall and Spring semesters.

Duties and responsibilities:
Each day, Monday through Thursday, the instructor will be required to teach two 1-hour lectures, 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour in the afternoon. In addition, the instructor will supervise a Teaching Assistant who will be responsible for running the lab portion of the course (6 hours per day).

Minimum Qualification:
Master’s degree in Computer Science or related fields,
College Teaching Experience/Teaching Experience required (1-5 years)

Compensation:
This position pays $10,000 per course ($40,000 annually) to teach courses and supervise course Teaching Assistants.

Instructors will earn an additional $2,500 per course to redesign/develop ($10,000 for all 4 courses) existing courses for the accelerated cohort in the Summer of 2022.

Open Rank Tenure Track Faculty Position

Fall 2022 – ADJUNCT INSTRUCTOR for DATA SCIENCE

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering (CSEE) are seeking adjunct instructors to teach several graduate courses on data science.

The Master of Professional Studies (MPS) program is specifically designed for working professionals to prepare them for a career in data science. All the courses are offered on the weekdays evenings at UMBC’s Catonsville or Shady Grove campus or online; courses are taught by professionals; students do not write a thesis; and emphasis is on applications and tools.

Students are trained to gain advanced skills in machine learning, big data platforms, data visualization, and database processing. We seek instructors with professional experience in data science and analytics, who can teach at least one of the following courses:

Required Qualifications:

  • MS degree in computer science or in a relevant field,
  • For technical courses listed above, experienced in Python programming and/or big data tools such as Hadoop, or database management languages,
  • Strong interpersonal skills when relating to students,
  • The ability to communicate effectively in writing, including conveying complex information and promoting in-depth engagement on course topics, and
  • The ability to devote adequate time to courses, including responding to students and providing meaningful feedback in a timely manner.
  • For remote instructors: experience in using online meeting platforms such as Webex, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Google Meet.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Being able to commute to our main campus or Shady Grove campus,
  • PhD in computer science or in a relevant field, and
  • Teaching experience (in class and/or online) at college/graduate school level.

Computing or Engineering Human Health Open Rank

Description. Examples of research areas include but are not limited to: ethical AI for healthcare data, community centered data science to understand health inequities, AI analysis of biomedical images for screening and diagnosis, user inspired design for rehabilitation engineering, work to understand the relationship between air quality and health inequities, and development of novel engineered therapeutics. Lecturer – Non-tenure Track Faculty Position

The Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering (CSEE) at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for a non-tenure track position at the rank of Lecturer. This full-time position begins in Fall 2022. The position may also have teaching and administrative responsibilities in the computer science program offered at The Universities at Shady Grove, in Montgomery County, Maryland.

The preferred qualification is a master’s degree in computer science or a closely related discipline. Ideal candidates will also have evidence of strong organizational skills. Experience in academia, industry and government will be considered in the evaluation of the candidate. Candidates who have had a non-academic career with a demonstrated commitment to teaching are encouraged to apply and may want to emphasize their industry experience.

The Lecturer position is renewable. Lecturers teach a wide range of courses, primarily at the undergraduate level. They advise students, mentor teaching assistants, and help shape departmental practices and policies. Lecturers are expected to continue their professional growth and will have the opportunity to be promoted through the ranks of Senior Lecturer and Principal Lecturer.

The CSEE Department is large and growing, with a diverse community of over 2,000 undergraduate majors in computer science and computer engineering.  Professors of the Practice, along with Lecturers and a cadre of tenure-track faculty, are the driving force behind the department’s broad effort to ensure a quality education for our undergraduates: working to improve computing education, curriculum, diversity, and student support. Description. The College of Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) is seeking to build on our strengths in research that intersects human health by making multiple hires at all levels. Examples of research areas include but are not limited to: ethical AI for healthcare data, community centered data science to understand health inequities, AI analysis of biomedical images for screening and diagnosis, user inspired design for rehabilitation engineering, work to understand the relationship between air quality and health inequities, and development of novel engineered therapeutics. There are many exciting areas at the intersection of health, engineering, and computing, and we are looking forward to seeing applications from candidates interested in these intersectional research areas. The College of Engineering and Information Technology has four departments: Information Systems, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Chemical, Biochemical, and Environmental Engineering. The College is a collaborative environment where faculty are encouraged and supported to collaborate across disciplines both at UMBC and with researchers in other institutions. Community engaged research is also strongly supported both by the College and by the Shriver Center that for over 30 years has been dedicated to community connections and engagement.

UMBC is located in Baltimore County, 10 minutes from downtown Baltimore. Our faculty live and work in the city as well as in the broader Maryland region. The area is vibrant with fantastic theater, arts, restaurants, and outdoor activities minutes from campus.

Qualifications. Candidates must have a PhD by June 2022 to be considered for a position. Lecturer – Non-tenure Track Faculty Position

The Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering (CSEE) at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for a non-tenure track position at the rank of Lecturer. This full-time position begins in Fall 2022. The position may also have teaching and administrative responsibilities in the computer science program offered at The Universities at Shady Grove, in Montgomery County, Maryland.

The preferred qualification is a master’s degree in computer science or a closely related discipline. Ideal candidates will also have evidence of strong organizational skills. Experience in academia, industry and government will be considered in the evaluation of the candidate. Candidates who have had a non-academic career with a demonstrated commitment to teaching are encouraged to apply and may want to emphasize their industry experience.

The Lecturer position is renewable. Lecturers teach a wide range of courses, primarily at the undergraduate level. They advise students, mentor teaching assistants, and help shape departmental practices and policies. Lecturers are expected to continue their professional growth and will have the opportunity to be promoted through the ranks of Senior Lecturer and Principal Lecturer.  

The CSEE Department is large and growing, with a diverse community of over 2,000 undergraduate majors in computer science and computer engineering.  Professors of the Practice, along with Lecturers and a cadre of tenure-track faculty, are the driving force behind the department’s broad effort to ensure a quality education for our undergraduates: working to improve computing education, curriculum, diversity, and student support. CSEE faculty collaborate with the Center for Women in Technology to increase the diversity of those who create technology, with programs designed for women in computing and engineering and transfer students from underrepresented groups.  In addition to our undergraduate programs, the department has graduate programs in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, cybersecurity and data science. Our faculty enjoy collaboration within the department, across departments, and with partners outside the university.
