Goldwater Scholarship Awarded to UMBC’s Chris Slaughter

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation was established by Congress in 1986 to serve as a living memorial to honor the lifetime work of Senator Barry Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years in the U.S. Senate. This year’s recipient is UMBC’s Chris Slaughter.

“The Goldwater Scholarship was something that I have always had interest in since I was a first-year participating in summer research. I perceived Goldwater as a milestone indicating that I have developed as a research scientist, and have been recognized nationally as someone who can become an impactful leader in science and research. Ultimately, my focus for my career is on the impact that I can have on underrepresented groups and communities, improving access to technology and education. I feel as though the Goldwater scholarship and community will help me with my goals of helping increase the representation of these underrepresented groups within STEM.”

“For the future, I plan to continue working at the UMBC Center for Advanced Sensing Technology(CAST) under my research mentor Dr.Govind Rao, on a system for transdermal glucose monitoring. Afterwards, I plan to apply to graduate schools to pursue a doctorate in biomedical engineering, as well as apply to scholarship programs/fellowships such as Rhodes, and Hertz.”
